I have a longstanding problem with low iron, managed with diet, supplements (when I remember), and the occasional infusion.
When I’m struggling with this, I feel flat, my energy is LOW, and I find it hard to exercise consistently.
But before I put two and two together and realise it’s my low iron affecting my mood, I’m hard on myself for not working out.
I see some version of this all the time-> women blaming themselves for feeling too tired to move.
If this sounds familiar, I just want you to know something.
- You’re not lazy.
- You’re not undisciplined.
- You’re just running on empty.
If you’re constantly feeling drained, it’s NOT because you need to push harder. It’s because your body isn’t getting what it needs to create energy.
So before you beat yourself up, check these three things:
1️⃣ Are you getting enough quality sleep?
Try to stick to a regular routine, bed and wake times, screen-free before sleep, and a good non-eating window (2–3 hours) before bed.
2️⃣ Are you eating enough?
If you’re restricting calories, cutting carbs, or skimping on protein, you’re likely not fueling your workouts (or your recovery). Food is your literal fuel.
3️⃣ Are you considering the impact of your hormones?
If you have a menstrual cycle, understanding the phase you’re in and how it affects your energy is a game changer. And if you’re in perimenopause or menopause, educate yourself on appropriate treatment options.
Some days your body will have more energy than others, and that’s okay. Defining your ‘bare minimum’ for those days allows you to work with your body, not against it, and keep looking after yourself without falling into an all-or-nothing mindset.
You don’t need more willpower. You need to understand and support your energy.
Be kind to yourself. Start here. 💛
‼️IMPORTANT
Remember, feeling tired and low in energy can be a symptom of a number of medical conditions. Make sure you’re supported by a good GP. 💙
