I have a longstanding problem with low iron, managed with diet, supplements (when I remember) and the odd infusion.
When I’m struggling with this I feel flat and my energy is LOW. And I struggle to consistently exercise. But before I put two and two together and realise it’s my low iron affecting my mood, I am hard on myself about not exercising.
And I see some version of this all the time– women blaming themselves for feeling too tired to work out.
If this is you, I just want you to know something.
You’re not lazy.
You’re not undisciplined.
You’re just running on empty.
If you’re constantly feeling drained, it’s NOT because you need to push harder. It’s because your body isn’t getting what it needs to create energy.*
So before you beat yourself up, check these three things:
1️⃣ Are you getting enough quality sleep?
Try aiming for a regular routine- go to bed and wake up at the same time each day if you can.
Ditch the screen before bed
Have a good non-eating window (2-3 hrs) before bed
2️⃣ Are you eating enough?
If you’re restrict calories, cutting carbs, and skimping on protein… it is unlikely you’re getting enough fuel to power your workouts (or motivation to exercise) and even more so your recovery.
Food is your literal fuel.
3️⃣ Are you considering the impact of your hormones? If you have a menstrual cycle, understanding the phase you’re in and the impact on your energy is a game changer. And if you’re deep in peri/menopause, educate yourself on appropriate treatments.
Some days, your body will have more energy than others – and that’s okay. Defining your ‘bare minimum’ for these days allows you to work with your body, not against it and keep looking after yourself without an all or nothing mindset.
You don’t need more willpower – you need to understand and support your energy.
Be kind to yourself and start here. 💛
