Have you ever gone to Rebel Sport or Kmart, determined to buy some weights so you can start strength training at home…
…and come home with no weights — but a few containers you definitely didn’t need — because you got completely overwhelmed?
You’re not alone.
I talk a lot about strength training, and especially about helping women do it confidently at home (#sorrynotsorry).
And after chatting to hundreds of women over the years, one of the biggest roadblocks isn’t motivation…
It’s this:
“I’d love to lift weights at home… but I don’t have any equipment, and I wouldn’t know where to start.”
And honestly, this makes complete sense.
There’s so much equipment. So many options.
And absolutely no guidance on what you actually need… versus what’s just taking up space.
So let me simplify it for you.
You need less than you think.
To get a genuinely effective strength session done at home, you don’t need a rack, a bench, or a full setup.
Most of the women I work with; in clinic, in GLOW10, and in personalised coaching, started with:
👉 a couple of pairs of dumbbells
👉 and a bit of floor space
A simple starter kit could look like:
One moderate pair of dumbbells (4–7kg)
→ great for upper body (rows, presses, curls)
One heavier weight – dumbbell or kettlebell (10–15kg)
→ perfect for lower body (deadlifts, squats, lunges)
That’s it.
You can build from there as you get stronger (and you will get stronger).
And whether they’re rubber, metal or vinyl? Doesn’t matter.
Just get something that fits your budget and your space.
(Little tip: I like to do a rough $/kg check — aiming for under $4/kg is usually pretty reasonable.)
Now — if you’ve already got some weights, but you’re not sure whether you’re picking the right ones for each exercise…
I’ve done a whole podcast episode on this.
