Everyone talks about strength training for muscles and bones and metabolism.

But after all these years as a physio, my favourite thing about it isn’t actually any of those.

It’s what it does for pain and stiffness.

I see it every week in clinic. Someone comes in stiff, achy, guarding a joint- expecting me to give them stretches.

But more often than not, I give them a strength exercise instead. Because often when we load it instead of stretch it, slowly and with control, their nervous system finally gets the message: this is safe.

That’s the bit no one talks about. Strength training isn’t just about getting stronger. It’s about teaching your body it doesn’t need to protect itself anymore.

So if you’ve been feeling stiffer and achier, but finding massages and stretching just isn’t giving you relief…may I please throw strength training’s hat in the ring? 🎩

Strength training helps manage pain and stiffness better than anything else I’ve seen.
Why?
Because it breaks the repetitive posture + no movement =pain.
Because it teaches your joints to move under load. Building control, confidence, and real mobility.
Because it tells your nervous system” “This range is safe. you don’t have to tense up or protect anymore.”
And because it gets you out of the stretch-rest-repeat cycle that rarely creates lasting change.

So next time you feel stiff or achy… Try adding strength with control before another ststic stretch.
