If bones were children… they’d be the quiet ones.
The ones who don’t complain, never make a fuss…
Until it’s too late.

I was reminded of this recently by my youngest child.

He’s not exactly quiet, but he’s the kind of kid who just gets on with things.
Resilient. Independent. A deep thinker, but keeps a lot inside.

So I assume he’s fine.
Most of the time, he is fine.

But this week, a quiet comment – a tiny wobble – made me pause.
And realise: he wasn’t.
And I’d missed it.

Because the quiet ones don’t yell for help.
They carry the load silently, until the cracks start to show.
(Can anyone else relate? 🙋🏼‍♀️)

And that’s exactly how I think about bone health.

Bones don’t complain like tight hamstrings or sore knees.
They don’t scream for your attention.
So we assume they’re fine…
Until they’re not.

Here’s what most women aren’t told:

👉🏻 Your bones are not a rigid frame.
They’re a living, dynamic organ system – talking to your muscles, brain, even your blood.
Bone tissue releases hormones that influence mood, metabolism, memory, and blood sugar regulation.

They’re the quiet achievers.
Muscle gets the glory, but bones do just as much heavy lifting, silently.

As women, we start with smaller, less dense bones than men…
And then we lose bone rapidly through perimenopause and menopause.
Up to 20% in the first 5–7 years post-menopause.

Here’s the problem:
Most of us have no idea it’s happening.
Because DEXA bone scans aren’t subsidised in Australia until age 70 – unless you’ve already had a low trauma fracture.

So many women are flying blind.

But there’s good news:
👉 Just like muscle, bones respond to challenge.
And when you give them the right kind of movement and nutrition – they get stronger.

✅ They need protein (bones are 50% protein by volume!)
✅ They need resistance and impact (not just movement – challenge)
✅ They need progression (lifting hard for you, not just “heavy”)

💛 The best part? Working on your bone health also improves your energy, mood, and metabolic function- right now!

I go deeper on all of this in this week’s podcast:

That’s it from me this week.
Don’t forget to take care of the quiet ones 😉
