When I was pregnant with my first baby (who just turned 13 😱), I remember seeing an ad for a company that would come to your house and baby-proof everything.
Power point covers. Corner guards. Toilet locks. Cupboard latches.
As a classic first-time mum, I thought… maybe I should do it? It felt like the responsible thing to do.
But in the end, I didn’t.
Probably because my overarching life philosophy is:
“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.” 😅
And honestly, it turned out to be the right call.
Because:
🟡 My first baby wasn’t that into power points. (He was really into pegs.)
🟡 My second baby loved finding every table corner with his head.
🟡 My third was obsessed with the bin.
Basically, I just dealt with each unique challenge as it came up.
And that’s exactly how I feel about equipment and strength training.
One of the most common questions I get is:
“What equipment do I need?”
“What weights should I start with?”
“How do I know if I’m doing it right?”
I love answering these questions. In fact, a post I did recently on what weights to use for each movement went wild – 84,000 views on Facebook! 😳
But here’s the problem:
Equipment often becomes a barrier.
Another thing to figure out before you feel ready to begin.
This is why I start almost everyone with bodyweight training.
Not because I think you’re weak.
Not because you need to “earn” the right to pick up weights (That thinking is outdated and unhelpful).
I do it because bodyweight is low friction.
It removes one more obstacle.
It lets you build rhythm before you build load.
It’s a strategy, not a compromise.
And rhythm is different from habit.
Rhythm means you start to figure out:
✔️ How you fit training into your day
✔️ What you do when your routine gets interrupted
✔️ How to find your way back after a few days (or weeks… or months) off
Bodyweight is your starting point.
It’s also your re-entry point.
But it’s not your end point.
No, you can’t build strength forever with bodyweight alone.
But you can start your journey with no equipment, or whatever you already have.
And when you need more tools?
You just cross that bridge when you come to it.
