So many of the women I work with tell me they can’t exercise at home – it’s just not their thing.
Does this sound like you? Maybe it feels like you’re not self-motivated enough, or it seems impossible because you rarely get time to yourself.
Sometimes we feel so certain about these things that they become part of our identity: “I’m just not someone who works out at home.”
Identity is powerful. It doesn’t just develop from our behaviours; it also shapes them. So if we see ourselves as someone who ‘can’t exercise at home’, it’s no wonder we never try.
Now, I don’t think we should all be exercising at home at all times. I’m all for getting out to work out (I mean, half of my business depends on it) A walk in nature, a swim at the local pool, a class at a Pilates studio, or a session at the gym- they all have their own magic.
But I do believe that everyone should feel able to exercise at home when needed. Being adaptable is a huge advantage, especially when life gets busy. And when we’re adaptable, we’re far more likely to stay consistent.
If somewhere along the way you decided, “I’m just not the type to exercise at home, or without someone telling me what to do,” maybe it’s time to reassess that belief.
As James Clear says:
“True behaviour change is identity change. When your behaviour and your identity are fully aligned, you are no longer pursuing behaviour change. You are simply acting like the type of person you already believe yourself to be.”
Here’s a Solution
The solution isn’t to only exercise at home; it’s to trust that you can exercise at home when you need to.
Shifting this mindset requires cold, hard proof- little actions that build evidence you are someone who can work out at home.
You don’t need to go all out. Start small:
- Try a few stretches to break up desk work.
- Follow a free YouTube video in the living room.
- Do a quick 10-minute strength workout in the backyard.
Make it simple and sustainable, even if it’s just a few minutes. With enough practice, you’ll start to see yourself as someone who can work out at home when it fits. And then? The world is your oyster.
