I woke up on Monday morning ready to go.
It was the boys’ first day back at school. I did an early morning strength session, had a coffee with Cormac, a nutritious breakfast and I had made lunches by 7am.
I powered into my day with a productive and positive energy, that I managed to sustain all day.
I was sailing and It felt amazing. ⛵️
Then…
Monday night I stayed up too late. I was woken overnight by one of the boys having a nightmare, and I woke up feeling tired & a grumpy.
So I skipped my workout, ate a fast breakfast, started my day feeling rushed and continued into the remainder of my day, chasing my tail.
I was anything but sailing.
What I wanted to do was jump ship.
What I needed to do was anchor. ⚓️
I talk a lot about defining our bare minimum.
This concept doesn’t resonate with everyone; some feel like it’s a cop out, some feel it’s admitting defeat.
That’s why I like this concept of “anchor and sail”.
Your sail is your ideal scenario—those days when you’re catching the wind and making progress. You’ve got the energy, the time; you’re productive but also relaxed. You’re in the zone to fit an entire training session in, stick to your meal plan, or go for that long walk. You’re moving forward, feeling good, and hitting your goals.
But we can’t always rely on smooth sailing.
And that’s where your anchor comes in—your bare minimum for the days when everything goes wrong, but you still want to look after yourself. It’s small, but it keeps you grounded, so you don’t drift too far off course. Maybe it’s doing 10 squats, 5 mins of deep breathing or pelvic floor exercises, or even just drinking enough water and getting into bed at a decent hour.
Both the anchor and the sail are essential. You need the sail to help you move forward, but you need the anchor to hold steady when the wind isn’t in your favour. Because here’s the thing— the wind is not always in our favour!
Maybe instead of thinking about your ideal and bare minimum, you can think about your sail and your anchor?
⛵️ What’s your sail? What’s your ideal when it comes to looking after your body and feeling good?
⚓️ What’s your anchor? What’s the smallest thing you can do to ground yourself, even on your busiest, messiest days?
Hit reply and let me know what you’ve come up with.
I hope you have a fabulous week, with more than one sailing day 😉
