When You’re Really Good at Planning Your Workout, But Not So Good at Doing It

Let me ask you something.

Are you someone who loves a list? That feeling of getting things done, ticking off tasks, colour-coding your diary, researching all your options before making a decision — it’s your comfort zone. It probably serves you really well in so many areas of life. You’re productive, efficient, and organised. Your kitchen drawers likely look neater than mine.

But when it comes to exercise — do you ever find yourself planning more than you’re doing?

You might be nodding already. Maybe you’ve said things like:

  • “I just need to figure out the right system first…”
  • “I’ll start once I’ve got the right weights.”
  • “I want to double-check the class timetable and compare it with my schedule…”

You might have even mapped out a whole plan, read all the reviews, researched equipment… but you still haven’t done a single workout.

This is what I call the Strategic Planner — one of the six exercise personality types I see in women, and the final one in the framework I’ve been sharing over the past few episodes.

The Strategic Planner Personality

Strategic planners thrive on structure. They love the feeling of a mapped-out plan and gain confidence from knowing the path ahead. But here’s the catch: the pursuit of the perfect plan can delay actual action.

And often, it’s sneaky. Because technically, you’re still being productive. You’ve stacked the dishwasher. You’ve replied to emails. You’ve even scrolled through three different adjustable dumbbell reviews.

But when that kind of productivity consistently takes priority over movement — it’s not actually helping you build the habit.

I see this often inside GLOW10, my online strength training membership. We’ve designed it to be friction-free — you just press play and follow along. And yet, I still meet women who join but don’t get started right away. They’re busy researching the ideal equipment setup, planning their space, waiting until things feel “ready”.

One woman I spoke to admitted that it took her weeks to begin — not because she wasn’t keen, but because she didn’t feel prepared. When she did finally start, she said the hardest part wasn’t the push-ups. It was pressing play without everything being lined up perfectly.

Why Planning Feels Good — And Why It’s a Trap

Over-planning gives the illusion of progress. And in many other areas of life, it is progress.

But with movement, especially when your goal is to build consistency — it doesn’t count unless you actually do it.

And the truth is, there will always be more emails to send, dishes to stack, laundry to fold. There will always be a “better” time to start. But if you wait for perfect, you might be waiting forever.

So What Helps?

Here are three practical tools I use often with strategic planners — women who are organised and capable, but find themselves stuck in prep mode.

1. Schedule it like a non-negotiable

You’re probably already using a diary or planner, so let’s make this work for you.

Write your workout in as an appointment — and protect it like you would a dentist booking or an important work meeting. One of my clients literally writes “Meeting with Libby” in her diary so no one questions it, and it helps her show up consistently.

Bonus tip: Have a Plan B ready for messy days. Not every session will go to plan — so plan for that too. What’s your bare minimum? Maybe it’s a walk around the block, or one superset. Write it in.

2. Reward yourself… with laundry

Stick with me here.

If folding the washing gives you that little hit of satisfaction (you know the one), use it as your post-workout treat. One of my members only starts her washing machine after she’s finished her GLOW10 session. It’s her rule — and it’s helped her stay consistent for over a year.

Sometimes the workout does become the reward. But sometimes pairing it with a satisfying little follow-up task is enough to tip you into action.

3. Track what matters

Strategic planners love a tick-box. So let’s make sure you’re tracking the right boxes.

Instead of measuring how perfectly you followed a program, start tracking your consistency. Did you move today? Yes or no. Keep it simple. Keep a calendar or a checklist on the fridge. Your job is to show up — not smash PBs.

And when you see a row of ticks at the end of a week, that feeling? That’s your motivation building.

Done Is Better Than Perfect

If you’re a strategic planner, I want you to hear this clearly: You don’t need another plan.

You need a way to start before you feel ready. Because that’s how consistency is built — not through planning, but through reps.

So if you’re nodding along and thinking “yep, that’s me,” here’s what I’d love you to do:
