Episode 16: Worried You’ll Do It Wrong? A Kinder Way to Start (or Restart) Exercise

EPISODE DESCRIPTION

If you’ve ever said, “I want to get moving, I just don’t know how to do it safely,” this episode is for you.

This week, we’re talking about the Cautious Mover—a personality type I see all the time in the women I work with as a physio. Maybe you’ve had an injury in the past, or you’re just not confident you’re “doing it right.” Maybe fear of pain, injury, or not being good enough has kept you stuck.

You’re not broken. You’re not being dramatic. You’re not the only one.

In this episode, I’ll walk you through:

  • Why perfection isn’t required for progress (or safety)
  • How fear can shrink our comfort zones over time
  • Three practical tools to help you build trust in your body again
  • A gentle reframe of what it really means to move “safely”

Let’s build strength from trust, not fear.

Have you ever wanted to move your body more… but found yourself stuck in fear?

Fear of doing it wrong.
Fear of hurting yourself.
Fear of pushing too hard, too fast.

If that’s you, you’re not alone. And you’re certainly not broken.

Over the past few weeks on the podcast, I’ve been unpacking the six common exercise personalities I see in the women I work with, and this week I want to zero in on one of the most tender—and most common—types: the Cautious Mover.

Meet Anna, the Cautious Mover

In Episode 13, I introduced a fictional woman named Anna. Anna isn’t lazy or unmotivated. She’s thoughtful. Careful. She’s had an injury before, and it really knocked her confidence. She wants to feel stronger, but she’s nervous about doing it wrong or pushing her body beyond its limits.

Anna watches workouts and thinks, “That looks too hard for me.”
She avoids group classes where instructors seem underqualified, or unsure.
She often says, “I want to move, I just don’t know how to do it safely.”

If any part of that feels familiar, you might have a little bit of Anna in you too. And here’s what I want you to hear loud and clear:

👉 You’re not over-cautious. You’re not too sensitive.
👉 You just want to feel safe—and that’s valid.

But here’s the reframe: You don’t have to get it perfect for it to be effective.
And doing something imperfectly does not mean you’ll hurt yourself.

Fear Can Be Loud—But You Can Get Louder

In my 20+ years as a physio, I’ve worked with hundreds of cautious movers. And while their fear often feels big and real (because it is), it’s usually fuelled by stories—past injuries, scary anecdotes from friends or family, or the belief that supervision is the only way forward.

But confidence is a skill. Not a personality trait.

You can learn to feel safer in your body again. You can build the kind of trust that says, “Even if I tweak something or take a step back, I’ll be okay.” And that trust will take you further than any perfect program ever could.

So, Where Do You Start?

Here are three tools I regularly use with cautious movers—inside my one-on-one sessions, group programs, and especially inside the GLOW10 Tribe.

1. Form Focus

Learning how to move well is one of the fastest ways to build confidence. That might mean:

  • Using a mirror

  • Filming yourself for feedback (kind, not critical!)

  • Slowing things right down to feel how your body moves

Inside GLOW10, form focus is a core pillar. Every workout is guided, and I provide cues to help you feel safe and supported—no guesswork, no pressure.

Pro tip: Teach someone else what you’ve learned. It helps lock it in!

2. Familiar First

Repetition is not a lack of progress. It’s the very thing that builds it.
If you’ve found a couple of moves or short workouts that feel doable—stick with them.

Use a movement menu of 2–3 exercises you can come back to any time. When you’re ready to try something new, preview it first. Let your brain go there before your body does. Confidence is built through familiarity, not novelty.

3. Safe Structure

This is a big one. The reason I created the GLOW10 Tribe was because I saw so many cautious movers—women like you—who wanted to move, but needed a structure they could trust.

The sessions are short, progressive, and guided. You can go at your own pace, pause anytime, and start with the level that suits your body right now.
It’s not about throwing you in the deep end. It’s about giving you safe steps into the water.

The thing about comfort zones…

Here’s one final thought: as we get older, our comfort zones shrink—not just physically, but emotionally too.

Suddenly, getting up off the floor feels harder. That movement you haven’t done in a while starts to feel unfamiliar… maybe even threatening. And when things feel threatening, we avoid them.

Before you know it, your comfort zone becomes a tight little box.
But you don’t need to smash through the walls. You just need to nudge the edges.

Maybe that’s just starting with one movement – squats for example – and committing to building confidence then strength here first.

Every little nudge counts.

Want to Start Gently, but Confidently?

I’ve created two simple ways to help you build trust in your body again:

🔹 Take the Exercise Personality Quiz
It’ll help you uncover your biggest blocks and the tools best suited to your personality.

🔹 DM me on Instagram with the words “gentle start” and I’ll send you my free 7-day strength plan—short, beginner-friendly workouts designed for cautious movers, no equipment needed.  @glowwithlibby

And of course, if you’re ready to feel supported with a simple, structured plan that builds strength in just 10 minutes a day, you can join the GLOW10 Tribe any time.

Let’s build strength from trust, not fear.
You’ve got this—gently but firmly. One small step at a time.
